How do I go about filing taxes for a small cleaning business? -

I own and operate a home/office cleaning small business. I don t make that much,...but, I m sure I have to pay taxes on what I have deposited in the bank. Plz, does anyone know how I go about it? I have not kept track of mileage or supplies.

It depends on how you operate your business. Let s assume that you are a sole proprietor. Then everything you deposit is income, but you have to really start keeping track of your expenses. Mileage, cleaning products you purchase, advertising you do (business cards and fliers), cell phone, uniforms, auto repair, etc.If you haven t been keeping your receipts you need to start doing so now, for next year. If you re not using a simple bookkeeping program like Quicken then you need to start at least keeping a daily journal of jobs you do each day. your starting mileage and ending mileage for the day. Any money spent on the business. Keeping the receipts in an envelope with the items circled that you used in your business. Keeping your cell phone bills. etc.I also suggest, if you are going to continue with this, that you open up an LLC, get insurance (you re working in other people s places of business and homes. If you break something how do you pay for it?). It is best to sit down with a good business coach, if you don t know one, message me and I ll connect one with you. One that can set you up to keep good records, and help you with your taxes so you can keep the most of your money that you can.

Is it possible to partially change an existing self employed business name? -

currently trading as a business consultant,want to become a retailer with the same self employed name.Can I change my business name from consultancy to traders?

if you are just a sole trader then yes, you simply change the name and inform hmrc of the change, if you are changing the nature of what you do as well then i d suggest starting a new set of accounts so when you do your tax return you can easily separate the two

it is quite pleasant once you get into the swing of things and become accustomed to the requirements and deadlines. especially if you like working with numbers like me.

I think you will need a large capital outlay for this business. you will need to pass your PCV this is like an extensive driving test and quite difficult. then you will have to purchase a vehicle or hire one then you will be paying for expenses before you even get a single customer. Add in advertising and finance charges i think you could burn 20,000 before you are taking anything and even then the payback for your investment is spread over five years at least. I think you would be better working for someone for a few years in the industry first, get some inside knowledge and youre license and then ask the banks to support you in your venture.sorry to sound so negative but i wouldnt look at a business like this as your first venture. take the skills that you have alredy and work with them.

As well as your PSV licence, you may need an Operator s licence and possibly another if you re running a fleet - can t remember what it s called.Approach your local Business Link and go on one of their free seminars on starting in business. It will help you get your thoughts clearer. They also have information on specific businesses and sources of funding.Potential funders require a solid business plan, which Business Link can help with, and they also expect you to put up at least 50% of the capital required.Gaining experience working for someone else is good advice. I always look for the following in my babysitters.Yes I prefer if they are CPR certified.(contact your local Red Cross they should have info on classes)I like it when they clean up after themselves and have my kids clean up. For example put the dinner dishes in the dishwasher. Have my kids put they re toys away.I look for interaction between my kids and them. I pay them to babysit not the TV. I love it when they do extra with my kids like take them to the park.
