I did a fashion degree and I ve graduated. I know how to sew, love to draw and textiles. I am jobless at the moment, can t even get a job in local fashion stores. I was just thinking that because it s recession, people won t want to buy fashion clothes because it s not what they need but what they want. my friend said that I should open up my own business then if there s no job opportunities for me. I could open my own business but it s gonna be costly and I need to find a job to save for the business. I ve worked as an assistant store manager and know accounting and managing cash flows and employees but it will take me years to save up for my own business, especially in times of recession. I would love to open up my own business though. it will be a good idea but not in times of recession. shall I talk to a business adviser from businesslink.gov.uk? I m afraid that they ll say research the industry, research the gap, research market . I ve researched the industry while I did my degree. I need help in finding a gap in the market. do you think they ll help me on that too?I did an internship as part of my course as a sandwich year but that s about it. in times of recession, is it necessary to have a degree now? should young people after doing a-levels find a job straight away and do their degree later in life when recession is over?
I can tell you employers are looking more than a degree. A degree is good, but you also need work experience with it. In any case, it all depends on what job you are looking for. As a fashion designer graduate you can start off having a small stall in a market and then progressing from then on. There are many schemes that can help young entrepeneurs. I remembered Alan Sugar organised a scheme, but I m sure there are many others such as the Prince s Trust who can help young people with creating businesses.
