Do you need any qualifications to become a self employed Painter and Decorator? -

Was thinking of a career change, I really enjoy the whole DIY thing. Have no problem with heights and have produced some top results with hanging paper and painting. So was thinking about starting my own business as a painter and decorator. Buy a van, get the kit, post some flyer s... what else does a woman need? Apart from indemnity/public liability insurance in case I spill some paint on Mrs Smiths antique rug, what else would I be needing? Do I have to have a City and Guilds or similar, do I have to join some kind of recognised authority?

I don t think you need any qualifications but it may be useful for advertising purposes and well as gaining more skills, meeting new people (having contacts are always good, especially as there aren t that many female painters and decorators) I would also recommend doing a course in business studies if you have the time as this may also help you in the running of your business. Also it s always good to have a valid CRB (Police check) as you can use this in your advertising, also it makes people feel more secure about who they are hiring.i hope this helps X

Check out your state s website. A lot of times there are links for how to start a small business in your state. I m not very familiar with painting, but in certain states in order to refer to yourself as a designer, decorator, interior designer you need certain qualifications and/or memberships, so do a few google searches before you start.

If your good at what you do, or better than most, then word will get around and you will get plenty of work, it would be good to get some sort of qualification, this would help with advertising your services.

anyone can start a business, i found the best way is to contact the revenue and customs self employment line, say you want to go self employed, the bank can be really helpful too so get an appointment with your local business advisor, they will tell you all you need to know about liability etc... all the banks want your business so they will often give you free banking for a year which can save a bit. you dont have to be too computer literate either for the book keeping, id start doing your own books then if you find time a problem then maybe get someone in to help. its all down to reputation so id start part time until you build up a reputation and have a strong client base. another good way to do it is to approach an established decorator and shadow them, work with them as an understudy type thing, they will always reccomend you to people if there too busy.hope that been helpful and good luck
