Looking to start my own label. Help ? -

I have a bit of cash stashed up and i m trying to start my own label. Pretty much, my thought is to sign local bands up, help them distribute their albums by paying for the studio time and/or making cd s to sell online or at shows. How can i do that by just working mainly at home ? (since i m still a uni student) (act scouting would be done at shows, of course)

First, you need to hire a law firm to create a contract form for you. When you sign the deal with the band, this will be the contract you want to have ready to be signed. You will also need to learn how to copyright the music, lyrics, and songs. Then you need to find a studio to record in and figure the best way to produce the CDs in mass quantities. Develop a website to advertise the CDs and figure out a method of payment (credit card or Paypal?). Do not be afraid to to market local stores to see if they want to sell the CDs (figure a wholesale price so the store can make money). Then you need to get the website noticed. If you can do that effectively, you might want to quit the record industry and sell your methods to all the other punters out there.
