How can I roughly estimate my taxes if Im starting a home-based business? -

I m considering a home-based business and I m wondering how the taxes will differ compared to my current salary, assuming all other elements are remaining the same. (Please note, I m not asking about the forms to use, how to submit tax information, or taking obscure deductions into consideration; I have already read up on all of these items.)I currently have a salary of $80,000. Based on what I actually bring home, roughly 35% of my paycheck currently goes to taxes (ridiculous, isn t it?). If I were to stop my corporate job and do a home-based business full time, what % increase or decrease could I expect in taxes for a sole proprietor that makes enough money to qualify as income. Again, I m not considering deductions like running a business out of my primary residence, business travel expenses, etc. I m strictly comparing taxes to taxes. It may not be possible as there are tons of factors to consider, but if anyone has insight, personal experience, or even a rough idea to guide me, that d be great!

As an employee you are paying 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare. Those will double when you become self employed, but the additional amount you pay is deductible for income tax purposes. As for your income tax there are too many variables to consider. The primary variable would be your income from the business. You do need to consider those deductions you call obscure , because they could be significant. In my business they are significant and make up for the extra FICA taxes I pay.

When you are self employed, you pay the employer s share of fica/mc, so our tax bill will go UP 7.65%.

What is a small business that I can operate from home to supplement my income, only need about 200$ a month? -

Computer savvy, Sous-Chef who doesn t have time to get a part time job because I also take care of my Mother with Cancer, so I was wondering if a part time computer job of some sort could help? All suggestions, opinions and opportunities are welcome! Thanks for your time, answers and Merry Christmas to you and your families!

The skill of cooking is very useful, and can lead to very steady income.I have a friend in a similar situation like yours who started a catering business. She started by cooking for a few neighbor families, then as they started referring her to others, began to grow the business by remodeling the kitchen, buying industrial strength appliances, even hiring the next door boy to wash dishes. She has just started catering for residents of a nearby senior citizen s home, and is likely assured of an income stream for as long as she is willing to cook.Hope you can achieve something similar.Forget the computer stuff - too much competition from computer savvy folks, and too many scams in there.

I think that Freestyle made a good suggestion about a cooking website and Bryan made an excellent recommendation to avoid the scammers.Unfortunately the scammers are all over the place looking to scam people who want to start a business from home.

Business Idea for the downtown street? -

1500 sq ft in space right in the downtown , what kind of business would u recommend ??? the rent cost 1800 $ plus heat . any ideas ????

If it s right downtown then a deli always makes money. Otherwise you ll just have to figure out what you want to sell and see if it fits in with the other businesses on the street. If you haven t gotten it yet be sure to check with local businesses right close to see how they do on their net profit and what their rent is. That sounds really steep if you re in a small town.

Photographer going out of business.? -

My son had senior pictures taken from a photographer last year. I ordered some pictures but wanted to order more when I had money and just put it off. I had talked to her and she said it wasn t a problem. That they keep the photos on file for a really long time and I can re-order whenever.I just found out that she is going out of business because she is taking a different job. When a photographer goes out of business do they ever offer to sell you the digital photos or a release of the copyright? Would I be really out of line to even ask if it is a possibility?

Talk to the photographer. It really depends on if the new job is still in your area or not. There is no harm in asking if she will sign a release. If she is not willing to sign, I am positive she will be able to make the copies for you.

Certifications needed to sell soap, etc. online? -

Do you need any kind of certification/license to sell handmade soap, lotion, etc. online? I live in Colorado (USA) if that helps.

With the product liability laws, being strict liability doctrine: As in if something goes wrong, you have no defense, and thus loose. And implied warranty, and merchantability laws are, I would get at least some germ fighter in the mix.I would go to the store, and look at some topic soap labels, and see who certifies the product safety, as in the lab who does the testing.. good housekepping labs? Then check out the website.
