why are all of these people like owners, managers, workers, government, consumers, community important to business activity?

Every person has defined role in an business activity, if one is missing another get affected. Taking from your question if there will be no worker what will owners do ? if there would be no government then who will regulate ? or if there wont be consumer then for whom to make product for ? so every people is special and wanted for his ability.

What would drive you to start a home-based business and why? -

There are so many people in the U.S. losing their jobs and although entrepreneurship is not for everyone; what would drive you to start your own small business? Home-based or otherwise?

Several things compelled me to start my home-based business1. Ability to work from home2. Low start up costs and low overhead3. Freedom to set my own hours4. My income is not limited by a wage or salary scale5..No worry about being fired or laid off6. Income Tax advantages

In our economy, everything is very situational when it comes to peoples job security and income in general. Some people are minimally affected while others have been hit really hard. Depending on your situation it may be necessary to find an alternative source of income. As for me, I am trying to start my own online store because I am college student who has to pay my own way completely. It is a way for me to hopefully generate income without having to leave my studies. I think online businesses even in the smallest sense are a great way to help people get through these tough times or even just to get their foot in the door on starting their own business.

The current economic downturn has made people realize how insecure formal employment can actually be. Starting your own business has the advantage of giving you control of a number of factors including the effort to reward ratio, the success of your business and the security of your income.

If I lost the ability to leave the house, then I guess my hand would be forced. It would have to be something that drastic tho. Selling goods for other people - legal rights? -

I recently began selling a quantity of items for someone but soon realised the quality wasn t good and didn t want to continue. I told them this and told them to arrive and collect the money I d made for them plus their remaining goods on a certain day. They arrived a day early when I was out. For the next 2 months I have tried to arrange a pick up and payment but it hasn t worked out and now they are annoyed at me for having to wait so long! I am now busy until the 18th of December and asked them to come and see me then. However they are up in arms about having to wait. Am I within my rights to stick to that date for pick up and payment? What legal rights could they bring against me? Many thanks

I certainly hope you made a copy of the correspondance stating when they could pick up their crap. Were they there on the day of the pre-arranged appointment? NO they came the wrong day and that is NOT your problem. If their stuff is being stored on your property it may be yours now. Check with a local attorney most first visits are free and if the property has been in your posession for 60 days past when they wre to pick it up in most states you are free to dispose of it however you see fit. LLC is usually the best option for the type of business you are talking about. You could incorporate, but that is a huge pain in the butt to deal with: another level of tax reporting (though not taxes, if you are a Sub-Chapter S corp.), reporting to the state, state excise taxes, annual report filing fees, etc. etc. Sub-S status does have some advantages, though. For instance, as long as you pay yourself a reasonable salary for your work (you need to be on payroll if you have a corp, you don t just take draws) then anything left over at the end of the year does not get the double self-employment tax; it just gets taxed at your income tax rate. Also, since you are an employee of the corp, you can lay yourself off if business gets bad and get unemployment compensation. States usually have stricter standards when an owner/manager of a Sub-S corp lays himself off, but if it is legitimate you should have no problem. I am not sure the extra bother and expense is worth it unless you are a very seasonal business and expect to lay yourself off every year (like if you live in a resort area of some kind.) An LLC gives you the same level of liability protection that a corporation does, without all the corporate paperwork and (sometimes) the state fees. Keep in mind, though, that neither the LLC or a corporation will be able to get a loan without you co-signing for it, and anything that you personally do that is fraudulent or illegal will still attach liability to you.
