This is a discussion question for small business management? -

sometimes employees are referred to as a company s greatest asset. Do employees fit the literal definition of asset? Why or why not?

If you re talking about an asset listed on the balance sheet, then no. Employees are not listed on the balance sheet.

Starting a small business requires a certain set of tasks and skills and growing a business requires other skill sets. It is really just common sense. The problem is that virtually all executive leadership and management development training programs are developed for the mass market. I would like to share a wonderful site that can be helpful for all those engaged in business or planning to do so. Check http://www.fintel.us/

No they do not. An asset is something you own that makes you money. I m assuming you are from the US and if so you re not allowed to own people, at least not legally.

Scenario.Billy s is a small locally-owned chain of grocery stores. There are three Billy s locations with a total value of 6.8 million dollars in property assets. Billy s is currently building one additional location worth 2.4 million dollars. There is also a centrally located warehouse used to ship and store bulk stock items. How does builder s risk apply in this situation? How could Billy s use Difference in Conditions (DIC) Insurance? If one of Billy s stores is damaged by fire, how do Time Element Contracts come into play? What types of losses may Billy s encounter? Why should Billy s consider reporting forms?

I need some good honest advice.? -

I am a photographer and I offer my clients a disc of images with copyright authorization to print images rather than offering prints. Now, when I do a portrait session I take many, many images to avoid blinking/odd expressions/photo error/people not looking at the camera/etc... from the images I take I select only the best images from the session and those are the only ones I give to the customer. I do all the editing/cropping/retouching/special effects to the images the customer receives and I try to give the most varitey of the images taken from the session to the customer. For example for a 1-hour session for say 3 people I take between 100-180 photos and the customer recieves anywhere from 15-50 images on the disc. Anyways the advice I need is to the following issue...Customers are ALWAYS coming back to me and saying I know you took many more photos than what was on the disc, Where are they, I want to see them! Well its very frustrating becuase I do not know what I should say/do about it. I do not want to give a customer images that are not up to my level of quality becuase I do not want to make a bad name for myself or my work. I do not want to give a customer images of test shots or un-focused/blurred images or any other images with technically problems. I would not want to give a customer a disc with a whole bunch of identically images and so on... But I also don t want to make a bad name for myself becuase people get upset that I don t give them what they want... To tell you the truth some people are very persistant and do not give up. What should I do and how should I handle this. Sometimes I tell the customers this before the shoot but that doesn t make a difference. I should also mention that I am not charging people top dollar for portraits, in fact I charge $25 for the session which includes the disc and image rights. So its even more frustrating when I have spent 2-3 hours from shoot to finish and the customer want more more more... Don t get me wrong I am excellent at what I do and I am a professional photographer so I hope you don t think I am offering crappy images cause I only charge $25. So please help me. I appreciate all advice from the consumer end and business end. Thanks!!

I undertand what you are saying, everyone wants to take pride in their work. Maybe you can consider this. What you consider top quality probably is because your the professional. However, customers love to have a choice as to what they want. You may want to consider selling them two discs. One is the photos you choose, the other is the rest of them. Charge them for the other disc, customers will pay for the choice. You may find by using the give them a choice approach you gain better relations with your customers which only helps your business.Label the disc you choose Photograhers suggested photos .Hope this helps you to come up with a plan.

ALSO I would simply TELL after THE shoot and when they come back to pick up thier disk that YOU took many photos to avoid the errors and gitches that happen and only develop the ones that came out with top quailty that the other photo s were either too dark blurred or just garbage to give them !PUT in Wrting and give it to them knowing they only GET waht YOU develop !ENDS your Problems and satisfies your customers request for stuff that isnt GOOD anyway !HEY for $25 i wouldnt bother to ask for junk pics !

I have just started a private limited company to begin trading in a few months, what do I legally need to do? -

trading what? beaver pelts? wampum?

If you ve registered the company at Companies House then you should have completed that part of the legalities. From your other question it seems as if you ve set up a business bank account, which you must have because a limited company is a separate legal entity. The other legal thing you need to do is register with Inland Revenue within 3 months of starting trading. Visit their site for lots of information, including registering for VAT if your turnover is likely to exceed 68k in a year or voluntary registration if you buy a lot of things that you pay VAT on.For more industry specific legal requirements, speak to your local Business Link. They re a great free source of help and information on starting in business.Good luck!

How much should I charge for babysitting? -

I don t really want to change by the hour, so if I babysit for a few hours how much should I charge, and if I spent the night babysitting, or for the whole day. The lady usually has her parents babysit for no pay so I don t want it to be to much. THANKS!!! :D

My rate is 7 dollars and hour, but the lady I babysit for pays me like i go my ten dollars and hour. If i were you I would say 6-7 dollars and hour, and if you spend the night, definitely 8 dollars an hour. Does that help?

Is a coin-op car wash/self-wash a good business to own? -

What types of expenses are involved in this type of business? What is an average annual revenue flow for this type of business? Let s say a 5-bay car wash, something small.

They don t have a quick payback even if you have a great location. The initial overhead for parts and a location is generally very high. Definitely a sustainable business model, but don t expect a positive ROI right out of the gate.

There are one or two forums out there for car wash owners, do a search for them. They have a ton of information about building, running, and maintenance costs. But to answer your question, it all depends on location. Get a good location and they can be a cash cow, pick a bad location and it can be a dog.

Here are some small business enterprises to consider:1. Providing a private tutoring service ranging from music lessons, English writing and reading lessons: to training seniors on how to operate a particular computer;2. Offering to supervise or monitor services to senior citizens especially those wanting someone to take them on errands, driving on long trips, watch and clean up homes left behind by seniors who have been relocated to assisted living quarters;3. Becoming a regional apartment manager servicing several properties while traveling to and fro to collect monthly rents and service tenant complaints;4. Leasing a van equipped with paper shredding machinery and go into high-income areas offering to shred their highly secretive personal papers or even allow them to do so in the privacy of their own home or office;5. Leasing high-pressure steam cleaning equipment which can be used to remove chewing gum in front of store fronts and apartment houses and charge an appropriate hourly fee;6. Acquiring a personal fiduciary bond up to $100,000 [actually 10% or $10,000] which will allow you to sell your services as a personal property document specialist which involves photographing and cataloging all kinds of personal property which are subject to insurance coverage; salvaging of family photo albums, etc.Good luck!

I would love to make money by writing books. One of my books would be to address the very question you re asking... how to make money in business. It s important to fill the customer s needs more than your own needs. If you ve ever watched Shark Tank, you will find a way array of business ideas... some good, some great and some stupid. It s important to use your own skills and interests but also to make sure there s a market for the products or services that you become involved in. The number of questions asked here day after day show there s a need for business information. The key considerations in a business are to make money, to save money, to save time, and/or give peace of mind.

Business Partnership divisions....? -

If I ve agreed to becoming a partner in a business, and my partner has the money to invest but I m investing my equipment and time.. are his investments more important than mine because it s dollars instead of hours?

I would have to say yes, but not buy much cause there is allot that you could do with money. but it s like having something that you need cause it wouldn t really work without the other. so i would have to you are both important in this situation. it like having rims without the tires or having tires without the rims. if you leave on of the two out thin they both become worthless.

Sometimes , unfortunately the person with money has the power of the partnership , but.. you are getting in with your equipment so , that may help the business be 50-50 . if not he will have more power than you , but everything can be solved if you talk before you do anything . Is better talk about any situation in the beginning than latter

Advertising Moving Business? -

I recently decided to try and start my 2 man moving business. We are not licensed or insured or anything yet. To get things started I put an ad on craigslist two weeks ago and Im going to put one on the yellowpages site also. Craigslist has only got me two jobs so far. I don t know where else to advertise for free where people likely to move soon would see it. (thought about real estate agencies, but I m not licensed so I dont think theyll recomend me..i am the cheapest around though).

talk to real estate agentsNetwork with them and tell. When they get a seller, ask them to suggest you guys as movers and you will give them a % of the cost
