What questions should I ask when considering buying an existing business? -

I m viewing a property with a business attached to it and want to make sure I ask all the right questions when I m there so I can make an informed decision!

What are the monthly expenses?If you don t know the expenses, there is no way you could project the break-even and profitable sales points.

Leasehold or Freehold?. if its leasehold you need a solicitor to see the lease. Business rates, utility bills, profit loss. You need to see audited accounts for the last 3 years. There are loads of questions, if you have never run a business before do not do it.

Only 1 question worth asking: Can I have a look at your books? .Seriously - they can tell you anything. I wouldn t touch a business without looking at the books, preferably with an accountant. If they ve got nothing to hide, they won t have a problem with that.

What software would a business need? -

e.g internet for emailmicrosoft office for documents/databases ect?????????????

An office suit like MS Office or Open Office, which is free. You will need a complete office package - That could be Microsoft Office which is available at a price or a free software called Open Office. Apart from that you will require an accounting package to take care of your accounts (Ex. Tally). You may also require a invoicing software for billing etc.

What is a good business to be in and start? -

I am 18 years old and I have a few grand on me in cash. I have looked into many various different business opportunities since I was 13, and some of the businesses I have looked into include stock market investing/trading, forex trading and things like that. I did feel truly passionate about these things, but found that the way I feel about it is that is is abusing honest business ways to make money in such as providing a product, service or offering to the general public. I want to start a business that is creative and has value to others and not one that I build up money just for myself for the sake of it such as trading stocks or currencies. My mother was thinking of retiring a year early and opening up a restaurant. I do believe she has the know how to keep an operation like that running, it s just getting started that she s having the problems with. Firstly, if your mother has no experience in the restaurant business, I d advise that her to work in restaurants for six months or so doing everything from busing tables and washing dishes to waiting tables and cooking if they ll allow her back there and if she has the skills. This will give her some of the work experience that she ll need to understand and run a cafe/restaurant profitably.If this is her first business venture, I would strongly recommend that she talk to a business counselor before she doe anything especially spend money.
