Is it fair to charge a handling fee on an ebay item? -

the buyer chooses to pickup rather than ship, Its Tuesday and they said they will be picking it up Friday. They are from a state over, I am definately trying to be fair, obviously i want opinions on this.If any extra info is needed please ask and I will fill in, if I missed anything!Thanks,Matt

Yes... handling fees include, travel, packaging, supplies, labor, and in this case, storage while you wait for them to show up. BE FAIR though. Handling fees should not be excessive. You did not say what the item was or how much it auctioned for, but be very reasonable with your handling fee. Also, did you or your ad indicate that if it were to be picked up that there will still be a handling fee involved? If you did not state that, you may not be able to charge them... be sure they know the EXACT price they will need to pay (and ask for CASH only) when they come to pick it up. Do NOT accept a check, money order, cashiers check... only CASH, otherwise it is possible that you will be out the product AND money AND you will have insufficient fees charged against you!

You find a great item to sell, you get it cheap and sell it for a nice profit and do well. In a few weeks 300 people are doing what your doing and your money is spread out. In a few months the item is dead from overselling. Its better to sell a few large ticket items with bigger profit margin like cars or electronics rather than hundreds of small items like software or shoes. Less to manage and post and you make more. The key to it is getting a popular item to sell from a supplier who sells cheap and is hard to find. Keep in mind that eBay belongs to eBay and if you invest a good deal of money in an eBay business you are trusting eBay won t pull your ads or ban your items or even sell them themselves. All of this happened to me and it cost me a bundle. I left and started my own site but never got the traffic. It does pay the bills, its risky as you answer to eBay and its not really a true self owned business and you will be tied to the computer.
