I am planning on starting a business in my home, and i wanted to put in a debit machine. how does it work? where does the money go?

I assume you are referring to a debit/credit card terminal. Basic ones plug into your phone line, you swipe or enter the card info, and your account gets credited. If the processor and your bank account are the same company, the transaction will be same day. If are different, expect at least 24-48 hour delay. Costs will be 2% on average of the transaction, plus a monthly fee (10 bucks or less).
