Anyone can call themselves a consultant. Many white collar workers who get laid off start consulting companies to fill the gap in their resume until they land a full time job.In the true since of the word, a consultant is an expert in their given field and have the knowledge, training and experience to help solve difficult problems that companies are willing to pay a premium to receive. Some consultants that I work with bill $300 an hour. However, these people typically have graduate degrees and a proven track record of producing results. Many times their compensation is tied to the completion of a project so they are at risk of not being paid if they fail to deliver.Being a consultant can be a great job but it often requires a great deal of work at no pay in order to land new clients. Many times these clients are located in other parts of the country or even the world so traveling for extensive periods might be required.
A Consultant is basically someone who is hired for a specific task. This person can be fired or dismissed without fear of employee workers rights. A Consultant can be hired for many years or just a very short time, till the task is completed, or the task has become obsolete.I was a Consultant for quite a few years, in Sales and Marketing. Although it felt prestigious, it was hard work and long hours for very little return. Basically, a Consultant is self-employed. A Consultant can charge a fee based on the expected time to complete the task or just charge a basic hourly rate based on their skill and education. It can be good money if you can find a client willing to pay and you have skills that are in high demand.
