whats the difference between major and independant labels and how can labels go from being independant to major?

Easy answer is money. You would need lots of money and backers to go global. Some people just get lucky by being around at the right time.A major label can afford to sell at a major loss to win future business. An independant would run the risk of going bust by adopting this tactic.
