What kind of permits do I need if I am starting a home business in CA? -

I am thinking of opening an in-home braiding/extension studio where I will be selling hair products and accessories. What kind of licenses/permits would I need (other than a cosmetology license which isn t required in order to braid hair in CA). I don t plan on having any employees or business partners, so I think it would be considered a sole proprietorship, but for the strangest reason, there seems to be least amount of info on ventures like these.Any info or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated!!!

Go for it. My suggestion would be to call city hall and ask them if you are within their city and you want to open your homes doors to start a business of braiding hair. How can you make it so it s legal in every way. City hall knows and since you didn t state your city, I can t tell you the answer.

You need to get a federal EIN, and a state sales tax permit. There may also be other industry specific licenses you need. Check your state laws for specific permits. It s also a good idea for tax and liability reasons to incorporate your business. An LLC is the easiest way to do this. A sole proprietorship creates some major liability and you end up paying more taxes than through a self owned corporation. There are a number of online businesses that can help you set this up. You may want to consult a local CPA who can explain the specific tax benefits.
