You can pick up a price chart at the post office (UK) which gives you a guidline on how much items of certain weights cost. once you have packaged your items at home, weigh the item on some scales (digtital scales are more accurate) then look up this weight on the chart which should give you a pretty good idea of what it will cost.It should really matter if you buy the packaging at the post office of not as long as you wrap any fragile items in bubble wrap etc. as far as i know there aren t any specific guidelines on packaging. Although if the item is broken during transit, you maybe responsible for a refund.
