How to find stats, market research etc to help with a business plan? -

Can you access government stats, Uni s research etc and if so how?With the WWW I thought there would be a lot of info but I can t seem to gather the right data.Any suggestions welcome.Also if anyone has good advise about putting together a business plan also welcome.
