You cannot own a name like Bob, Bill, John, and other common worldwide names and real names. You can do a copyright off a novel if the name is the title, but it ll be limited.best right is trademark when you own a business. But that only protects you from business infligment of name, not the use itself because freedom of information act covers some people from using other people s work, ideas, invention, etc.So in short, you can never fully own something.Just like wal-mart. There s many DBAs that rip that name, but change it a bit to avoid inflingement.

I would like to own a character name that I made up myself. How would I go about it? Is it like owning a business name?
