I am thinking of starting a restaurant in my home just for friends and family.? -

Are there laws, codes or regulations if you serve exclusively to family and friends? I would not be advertising or displaying any signs. I plan on charging $5 per person..with kids eating free. I have a lot of family and friends that work and would gladly pay to have someone cook for them.

You need a business licence and a business name. If you just do it without these things and Health Safety, or the Local Council or Police find out, you could end up with a hefty fine for running a business with out them. You could just do it for free and take a complimentary donation from guests .Health Safety require you to have a separate place for food handling away from the main eating area so a open planned kitchen dining area would not be suitable. You also require local planning permits and Health Safety permits and Food Handling Permits to proceed. You also require proper refrigeration and storage. You also need parking exemptions for visitors. Also, a liquor licence will be required.I ve seen many houses turned into hair salons and they do very well. Running a restaurant from home will require special setup and permits. You had best speak with your Local Council and Town Planing Department, if you proceed. Like I said previously, just invite guests for free, and put a note on the table, Donations Welcome

At those prices you re guaranteed to lose money really fast..Many states and cities have a myriad or rules for restaurants, including fire protection, parking, zoning, etc.
