Best locations and tips to sell a business? -

I have a friend who has a profitable C-Store but he s getting tired of running it, he s had a few people look into it, but nothing major. What steps can I take to help him improve his chances of selling; where should he post, how can he get attention, what should an ad include? Thank you!

I had a guy I played hockey with that sold 6 convenience stores for well over $1,000,000 dollars profit. In this case he had successful businesses selling gasoline and grocery items. He was approached by a larger Another had to offload one business and he went through a commercial real estate broker to sell the business. The broker performed all the advertising and did so out of his fees (10%!!!!). You will occasionally see these advertisements in real estate magazines. Some of the better magazines are for Realtors only and others, such as FSBO are for anyone. I have seen some stores listed in For Sale By Owner, Pennysaver, etc. You will likely want a small blurb with a [Picture}C-Store Operation, profitable, established, $xxx, xxxYou could also have him post the information on sites such as www.bizbuysell.com and www.craigslist.com. Those articles will get some attention but not as much as if he marketed it locally. If he is a member of the Chamber of Commerce he could advertise in their monthly newsletter or their quarterly newsletter. Some folks go to their larger competitors and the competitor may buy the business if it does not yet have a presence in the area. It s all about economies of scale and competition.Whatever he does he is not going to feel that he got a fair price for his business in this economy.
