COPYRIGHT QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? -

I have had my nickname for more than a few years and I m now trying to use it as my official name as a hip hop artist. A group in Italy has taken up the same name exactly as I have it. I guess what I want to know is how much it costs to get a name copyrighted

Hi MarcoDo you mean copyright or do you mean trademark? You can copyright lyrics or music or stuff like that. Names, brandnames and logos are trademarked.A basic UK trademark will cost you 250 just in the fee you pay to the Patent office. If you can do the paperwork yourself then thats it. But if you need to use a patent attorney then you can add several hundred pounds to that.trademarks are registered against a group or class. So you would have to decide which classes to apply for - so registering it against footwear would be a different class to Tshirts for example. Each class costs a bit more - so going for several classes adds to the cost. You could get a UK only trademark, or one that covered other countries in the world. It costs loads of money (and time) to get a worldwide trademark. It can take 6 months to get just a UK trademark and the more countries you go for the longer it can take.My advice is to do some basic research on the UK trademark website (www.ipo.gov.uk) and see what is out there already. Then ring a patent attorney and they will give some free advice over the phone.Jonathan
