What certificates and qualifications do I need to open a small shop and cafe? -

My partner is Polish and she and a friend want to open a shop selling Polish food with a small cafe serving homemade Polish food

First of all you don t say where you are, but the main points are.You need to find to right location and premises first. Then apply for Planning Permission with all the appropriate design plans. If you are selling food you will have to comply with all the Food Regulations, Health Safety, Hygiene and obtain certificates of competence from the Local Council. All your staff will have to hold certificates in training and food preparation. You must have a good grounding in food storage and refrigeration and chilling. You also need various licences for some types of food, especially if you are importing them. And that s before opening the door!

Assuming you re in the UK, contact your local Business Link for free help and advice on strating up.It depends on the type of premises that you take on whether you need planning permission for change of use.You ll need food hygiene certificates and to be in touch with your local Environmental Health people. (Make friends with them and they can help you a lot. Ignore them and they ll close you down in a heartbeat!) Business Link is very good on food hygiene. You ll also need business insurance. There are companies that specialise in insuring the catering industry. Business Link should have some names for you.Good luck!

Your local councils website will give you all that informationIt will probably include policies and certificates for - health and safety, food hygiene, public liability insurance and maybe more
