I still use written ledgers and we are quite a large, vat registered company. I find it a lot easier to follow and easier to find any discrepancies.The only alternative that I would consider is Sage - but you would need some training for that.
If you re good with Excel, you can set up spreadsheets that work well. I ve done this for our companies for many years and we re VAT registered. I ve set them up in such a way that the VAT figures are easy to pick off at the end of the quarter.I know you re not VAT registered, I m just saying that you can do quite a lot with a spreadsheet rather than going into a software package that may or may not do what you want. If you ve worked with ledgers, you know what s needed from the spreadsheets. It s easy to put in a checking column to point up any discrepancies in your data entries.Talk with your accountant and ask what they d recommend. We just give ours the spreadsheets at the end of the financial year and they do the TPL and balance sheet from them.Good luck!

Quickbooks is fine but my accountant uses Peachtree Acounting software. Most all the CPA s she knows use it over Quickbooks. I have Peachtree here on my computer and it is easy for my accountant when I pass on a disc to her. It would never hurt to take a course in basic accounting to help you direct your business. Probably Accounting 101 and Marketing 101. Any introductory business course -even Business Law 101 would give you a great start in business. There are two ways to account for your business, Accrual accounting - more complected, your goal is to match revenue with expenses. It is what it means, if you buy a 10,000 machine, you expense that machine right away. When you make 10,000 on a sale, you report that income and deduct your expenses. Now, I think the limit to write off a single piece or series of pieces of equipment is around 100k this year, it will be near that. If you really want software ie your going to be so busy you can t just do this in a spreadsheet, look at quick books - you can get it at best buy. I think that is a great idea! Good for you! Get your State business License, Your City license, and County if required in your area. I m assuming you will be traveling to their homes or nursing homes? You can call and see if there would be interest by talking the Nursing homes Staff and get permission to visit there. A lot of the elderly there wouldn t be able to travel, so I think this would be a wonderful chance for them to relive their memories! You can advertise on CL or Newspaper too. Or put a sign at the grocery store. Just be careful if you do go to homes and bring a friend with you, take precautions. Great idea and I hope you succeed!

Sounds like you work for a crappy company. An employer can ask you to work as long as they feel, but they are required to increase your pay if you work more than 40 a week. You can deny the overtime since it was not what you had signed up for, but don t expect your manager to do you any favors afterwards.You are allowed one break a day, and that is lunch. Clearly bathroom privileges don t apply, take them as needed. If you need to get up and walk around or smoke a cigarette for 5 minutes, you will have to clear it with you manager.Lastly, if you are using company vacation time or paid time off, you have to clear the dates with your manager ahead of time. If you went ahead and bought tickets and then told him a few days before you left, that could be a problem. If you give your employer 2 weeks of notice before vacation leave, they shouldn t deny you unless everyone else in your office decided to request the same days off.
