I use Ebay for most things that include cameras, watches, clothing of XXL size, and gadgets, only from GB. If you leave Ebay try Gumtree, on that site you can ask for things as well as sell. But be careful as its not as secure as Ebay. One thing about Ebay though is that its got good settlement clauses and you can at least show people up for bad selling or buying if something goes wrong. I have tried Gumtree and got no luck and not even a reply when fiddled.

In the Free Banking Era , from 1791 to the Civil War, even banks issued their own currency. The states and colonies issued money at various times in their history, from their founding, but was stopped in the 1860s.Here s a pretty good history of American money:In our society today, money s value is measured by what it can buy--its purchasing power--not by its material worth, but it hasn t always been so. American currency has spanned centuries of evolution and numerous transfigurations to reach the size and shape that we carry in our wallets today. It has been an evolutionary process which often came about in times of crisis--like the Civil War or Great Depression--or to respond to demand as society struggled to put into place a monetary system that would function smoothly and inspire confidence. This development process is ongoing and continues even now as redesigned currency is issued in 1996. But the legacy of the process is a rich heritage of United States currency that gives us a fascinating, colorful, and reflective glimpse into the growth of our nation.The Federal Reserve Bank has a special interest in this subject. As part of our role as the government s central bank we are responsible for putting currency, as well as coin, into circulation. The Us Govertment was strapped for cash or hard coin also known as specie during the Civil War and started to print what was called Green Backs because they had green backs. One of the reasons for the paper money was that it was easier to pay the thousands of soliders in the fired. Paper is a lot easier to handle then heavy coins. They were silver certificates and some were gold. That meant that the paper money could be exchanged for gold or silver at any federal bank. We went off the silver and gold standard during WWII. We no longer had the hard silver or gold to back what was in circulation. States did not print money they authorized banks to issue bank certificates that could be used for a medium of exchange. It did not work well because many banks out of state would not recoganize the certificate.
You might benefit from knowing that there are at least two kinds of paper money : backed and fiat.Backed currency has an equivalent amount of something like gold or silver stashed away somewhere. The old gold or silver certificate bills, from like before 1965, could in theory be exchanged for gold or silver. fiat notes have no backing, except the likelyhood that tomorrow someone will accept it as having value.

Our salon has a credit card machine. Owner wants to charge us $1 per client + 5% of our tips. Is this normal? -
Yeah, 5% is way too high - though it depends on the credit card that you re using -- I believe traditionally Amex takes the biggest percentage of each sale. There s also a rule, it was a MasterCard rule that you weren t allowed to charge customers more if they were charging. Now this doesn t apply here since you re not a customer, but the intent there is that they didn t want the use of a credit card to be perceived as a disadvantage compared to cash. In your boss s own way, that s what he s doing with you. I don t think it s specifically against their rules, but it goes against the intent.And as another poster suggested, it s not your fault people want to charge. It s your boss s decision to have the machine and he s done so because it s a sales advantage (or rather not having one would be a disadvantage).The $1 per client is bogus. Most POS vendors charge very little per month - if it s hundreds, they should find a different one. It s the percentage that s the big part, and if it s 5% it would only be because he has a bad credit rating or is considered a risk.

I dunno, I d stay away from starting a clothing company. The market is way too saturated. I can buy good cotton t-shirts for $0.50 each myself and they must make a profit on that AND pay taxes.But if I was to start one I d first go and talk to as many shops/markets/local wholesalers I could find to see what feedback I get (what they need, what they want to pay) and if positive I d fly to taiwan or india and see what it is like over there for price, design etc.If it works ok you can bring them in one or two times and when you know the way you can start your own local place and undercut all the silly buggers and become rich ;)Or you could carry on supplying but just move up in quality and fly to Europe to see what you ccan bring back. Anything that ends with ini or cci is bound to be a killer!
