you can operate as a sole proprietorship and try to keep track of when you used your cell phone for work and when for personal, but what i would suggest is incorporating, to do that, what you need to do is consult with an accountant to determine what type of corporation you should form (my guess is it will be an S corp), then you will have to have a lawyer draw up all the paperwork. You will easily spend $750 just for these consultations. There is just the one resale certificate--that is simply the way you collect pay state sales taxes--it allows you to buy goods with out taxes (and then you pass that on the the customer). Assuming you are in the United States. You should register your business as soon as possible. You can chose to run it under your own name and SS number for a while if you chose but ultimately will want to change that over to an LLC or Corp. Probably an LLC will be most effective for you. It is quite easy to do and you can probably do it yourself online. You do need to register for a federal identification number then. Look, there is no certain profit margin that dictates when you have to do it but certainly you don t want the feds finding out that you didn t do it. If you run for a while under your own social security number, I would suggest going to your local county building and registering a d/b/a, which is doing business as and give yourself a company name. Before too long, you may want to trademark your brand name and logo. If you become popular (as I am sure you hope to), you don t want someone stealing your ideas. In that arena, it is literally first come, first serve. It depends on the station, it s age, condition, equipment, etc. To keep up a gas station? Way too much money. There are licensing fees for alcohol, cigarettes, lottery, etc, testing fees for the storage tank system (can be upwards of several hundred to well over $1000 yearly), yearly tank fees due to the state (several hundred to 1000+ depending on state, # of tanks), buying gas to sell can cost you up to $30K per week, depending on the size of the tanks and the cost of the store inventory. The profit margin on gas stations is very thin in the end for an individual owner. And, if you don t keep up compliance on your tank system, the state will go after you and you ll have fees and penalties ranging from the thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. And if your tank system is found to be leaking, be prepared to spend $10,000+, depending on what state you re operating in, to start remediation efforts. Frankly there is no degree to be a successful entrepreneur. You will need a strong work ethic, start up capital and some practical knowledge. Take some basic accounting or bookkeeping courses. Some courses on real estate law, leasing and general computer software might be useful.Get a job at a coffee house and learn everything there is that makes it work. Why can t I just buy the camera where you got it from? They don t sell to the public, so only you as a business can get them? Why buy it from you when the person right below you on ebay, who is doing the same thing as you, getting it from the same place, is selling it for less? The only people who make money on ebay is the wholesalers cuz they have 1,000 s of people like you buying their stuff, thinking that you can quit your day job buy a mansion.
